Dot-Com Sees First Growth Of 2002
August 6, 2002
The number of Internet addresses registered with dot-com, dot-net or dot-org extensions grew in July for the first time in nearly a year, according to a report to be released Wednesday.
New registrations of dot-com, dot-net and dot-org addresses outpaced expirations and cancellations by nearly 130,000 names in July, according to SnapNames, a company that tracks domain-name registrations.
All three domains grew, with dot-com posting the largest net increase of more than 100,000 names. With July's growth, the number of names registered in dot-com, dot-net and dot-org rose to 27,242,790.
"Whether that means long-term stability for dot-com, I'd prefer to track it a bit more," SnapNames spokesman Mason Cole said today.
Beginning in the early 1990s and lasting until October 2001, the universe of dot-com, dot-net and dot-org names grew (often exponentially) during every significant interval for which it was monitored.
